| The New York Times Company Reports 2007 First-Quarter Results
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The New York Times Company announced today first-quarter diluted earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations of $.14, compared with $.21 in the first quarter last year. Excluding special items, EPS was $.25 per share from continuing operations compared with $.25 in the first quarter last year. Operating profit decreased to $54.5 million from $60.5 million in the first quarter of 2006, while operating profit before depreciation and amortization increased to $98.9 million from $95.9 million in the first quarter of 2006. Included in the first-quarter results are the following special items: Accelerated depreciation expense of $11.6 million ($6.7 million after tax, or $.05 per share) for assets at the Company's Edison, N.J., printing plant, which is in the process of being closed.
Theatre League Supports Bill to Regulate Pedicabs in NYC
As a means of making the pedicab industry safer for New York theatregoers, The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc., the trade association for the Broadway industry, has mobilized in support of the licensing, safety, insurance and reporting features outlined in Intro. 331-A. The League is urging the New York City Council to override the recent veto of the bill. Pedicabs, the League contends, contribute to a dangerous and chaotic atmosphere in Manhattan's Theatre District. "We believe that the theatregoing experience begins before the show starts, and continues after patrons leave the theatre and to this end we are very concerned about the growing number of pedicabs that invade the Theatre District after matinee and evening performances," commented Charlotte St.
Best Cities For Blacks Does Not Include NYC
Black Enterprise magazine has released its list of the top ten cities for African Americans to live in today, and New York City has not made the cut. The list is mostly made up of southern cities, with Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area taking the top spot."The perception of the city has changed. There's a lot more business development," says D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, who also cited the city's growing job market. Rounding out the list were Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Houston, Nashville, Dallas, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Columbus and Jacksonville. .
