Brooklyn singer's heart found in Memphis soul

Singer-songwriter Jake Rabinbach is from Brooklyn but clearly has an affinity for Memphis and the Southern soul rhythms of Stax and Hi records. The debut EP from his band Jump Back Jake is steeped in the stuff, to such a degree that it would border on slavish imitation if Rabinbach did not also bring his own distinct songwriting sensibility to the effort.

Recorded last year at Young Avenue Sound with the ubiquitous Kevin Cubbins behind the board, Already Sold recycles a number of elements familiar to any Memphian. Guitarist Jake Vest (also a member of alternative rock band Augustine, recently re-named the Third Man) has mastered Steve Cropper's chicken-picking style. And the rhythm section of bassist Dirk Kitterlin and drummer Greg Faison (like Cubbins and Vest, a member of the Makeshift community of artists) approximate well the slinky rhythms of the Hi Rhythm Section, with Faison's wet drum sound and ticktack hi-hat a direct homage to Howard Grimes.

On Monday, Health Plus to host seminar for uninsured

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Health Plus will court Staten Island's uninsured Monday during a Cover the Uninsured Week seminar.

The borough has the largest percentage of qualified people in New York City who do not have health insurance.

During the event, which is open to the public and begins at 10 a.m. in the borough president's St. George office, Health Plus representatives will be on hand to explain how Islanders can qualify for free or affordable health insurance.

Throughout the week, Health Plus vehicles and representatives also will be at the St. George Ferry Terminal, the Pathmarks in Port Richmond Center and New Dorp, and several other locations, including hospitals, to provide information about the program.

The program has supplied more than 6 million children with health insurance.

Prosecutors May Have More Junior Gotti Ammunition

A tough Queens gangster who defied the feds and took the stand as a defense witness for John Gotti in the historic trial that ended with an astounding acquittal in 1987 is a budding prosecution witness against John A. "Junior" Gotti, Gang Land has learned.

The new turncoat is Peter "Bud" Zuccaro, a longtime mob associate who will soon make his debut as a government informer at the ongoing trial of capo Dominick "Skinny Dom" Pizzonia.

Pizzonia, 66, is charged with three mob rubouts, including the 1992 slayings of Rosemarie and Thomas Uva, a husband and wife team that robbed mob social clubs.

The Pizzonia case is only a warmup for Team America's latest recruit, however, with the bigger show expected to come later against the wiseguy the feds most want to nail.
